“From Analog to Digital, or How to Make the ‘Perfect’ Poppy-Seed Bagel.”
The Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Professor Edward Saff, professor of mathematics and director of the Center for Constructive Approximation at Vanderbilt University.
Moving from analog to digital is a common occurrence—think of scanning a photograph to a computer screen or transferring information from a record to a CD. Saff will discuss how minimal-energy techniques can be used to digitize surfaces in any dimension, a process relevant to a variety of scientific contexts. As a whimsical example of digitization, Saff will demonstrate how to make the “perfect” poppy-seed bagel.
